A bit of history of Carcassonne
In the 4th century, the Roman Empire fortified Carcassonne with a long wall to protect it from Germanic invasions. The city’s occupation by the Franks in 759 gave rise to the legend of its protector, Lady Carcas. In 1067, Carcassonne came under the control of Raimond-Bernard Trencavel, the Viscount of Albi and Nîmes, marking the beginning of a history deeply influenced by his dynasty. In the 13th century, the city took on the appearance we recognize today, with its impressive count’s castle, formidable fortress, and doubled walls.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Carcassonne’s castle, 3 kilometers of ramparts, and 52 towers can be explored year-round.
